Statutory Status

Statutory Status

MES like MESCO is a trust registered under the Indian Societies Registration Act, 1960 and Bombay Public Trusts Act, 1950. It is recognized as such by the Income Tax Dept., (under section 80-G of the IT Act, 1961) which provides donors to get 50% exemption. It is also registered with the Central Government under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act, and by virtue of which permits it to receive donation in foreign currency from any part of world.

Historical Perspective

MES started collecting funds in a modest way back in 1978, by enrolling Patron Members, each of whom would contribute a brick so to say, for the school (by paying R. 5,000/-) as membership fees. It was expected to raise Rupees one crore by enrolling 2000 members. However, it could enroll only few members it also received larger amounts in the form of donations. All this went into raising funds for buying the plot of land. Earlier, another plot of land (approximately 3000 sq.m.) was identified and part payment made; but since, the plot (which was open and accessible from all sides) gradually got enveloped in a concrete jungle and the approach road got obliterated, MES Committee therefore decided to surrender the plot at the appreciated price and which was appropriated towards a better and larger plot (three times the size of the previous one) this was purchased in 1998.

MES Expertise in Education

MESCO has been conducting pre-primary English medium schools in various slum pockets on Bombay for the last twenty-five years; in addition since the last seven years it has been managing a recognized primary school; and for the last two years it has adopted a full-fledged Municipal School (having complete primary and secondary sections, as also a primary teachers training section). MES Executive Committee has five (of its fifteen) members on the Committee who are form the teaching profession (at school, college and University levels).

Siting of the School
• The school (plot which has been purchased) is located at Kausa.
• There is not a single quality school (affiliated to ICSE) in the area (for a population of 0.5 million), over a radius of 5 miles.
• Land for the school was available at less than 10% of the rate at which is available in Mumbai (though only 20 miles away).
• Qualified teachers readily available (a recent advertisement in the newspapers for recruitment of teachers for the school attracted more than 120 applications).
• Adding one level each year, classes from Std. IV of the school already bring conducted (very close to the site where the school will come up) in rented rooms, with an enrolment of about 400 students.
• Parents are willing to pay for quality education; as seen from the subsidy projected (about 45%) to be provided for the school.
